The honest day-trip plan from Malta if you cannot stay overnight. Cittadella, Ggantija, Dwejra in 6 hours with the ferry round trip. Plus the case for staying.
The standard Gozo day trip from Malta is: take the early ferry from Cirkewwa, see the Cittadella, Ggantija, lunch, Dwejra, take the evening ferry back. Six hours of Gozo plus four hours of getting there and back. Doable, hard to skip if your Malta trip is short, and a substantially weaker version of the island than three nights would produce.
This is how to do the day trip honestly, plus the case for converting it into a longer stay if your dates allow.
The honest day-trip plan
08:00: leave your Malta base. From Sliema or Valletta, that means a 35-50 minute drive (or bus #X1) to Cirkewwa.
08:45-09:00: arrive Cirkewwa, board the 09:00 or 09:15 ferry. Foot passenger fare €4.65 return (paid on the Gozo side coming back). Car ferry €15.70 return.
09:25: arrive Mgarr (Gozo). Pick up a hire car at the Mgarr terminal (€25-35 for a single day; Mayjo or local agencies) or take bus #301 or #303 to Victoria (20 minutes, €2.50).
10:00-12:00: Cittadella in Victoria. €15 combined ticket covers the bastion circuit, the Cathedral, the Cathedral Museum, the Old Prisons, and the Folklore Museum. Two hours is enough for the essentials. Skip the smaller museums for speed.
12:00-12:30: drive 15 minutes to Xagħra. Quick lunch at Oleander in the main square (Maltese kitchen, casual) or pick up a ftira at Maxokk Bakery (cash only, takeaway, the classic Gozitan flatbread sandwich).
12:30-14:00: Ggantija temples + Ta’ Kola windmill (€10 combined ticket). 90 minutes covers both. The combined ticket also includes the Xagħra Stone Circle viewing platform if you have an extra 15 minutes.
14:00-15:30: drive 25 minutes to Dwejra. The Inland Sea boat trip (€4, 25 minutes), Fungus Rock view, Dwejra Bay swim (if the weather is warm). Note: the Azure Window collapsed in 2017 and is not coming back. The area is still worth visiting for the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock.
15:30-16:30: drive back to Mgarr. Optional swim at Mġarr ix-Xini (5 minutes from the ferry terminal) if you have an hour.
17:00 or 17:30: ferry back to Cirkewwa. Arrive Malta by 17:30 or 18:00.
Drive back to your Malta base.
Total: 9 to 10 hours from front door to front door.
What you miss with this plan
A lot. The day-trip pattern visits Gozo’s three obvious sites in their daytime versions and skips everything else:
- Ramla Bay, the red-sand beach. Not visited.
- Mġarr ix-Xini swimming + the Rew Rew restaurant. Maybe a quick swim if you have time.
- The coastal walks at Sannat-Ta’ Ċenċ or San Lawrenz-Gharb. Not done.
- Any of the diving sites. Not done.
- The salt pans walk at Marsalforn. Not done.
- Ta’ Pinu sanctuary in Gharb. Skipped.
- Any actual evening on the island: no sunset at Dwejra, no village restaurant dinner.
- The farmhouse pool: not booked, not used, not seen.
The day-trip version of Gozo is a tour. It does not produce the personal sense of the island that staying overnight does.
The case for staying
For trips of 5+ days total, the strong recommendation is 2-3 nights on Gozo with a converted farmhouse base. The case is detailed in the case-for-Gozo magazine piece and the Gozo regional hub.
The summary: a single Gozo day produces 6 hours of headline sights; three nights produce 72 hours of varied use (one cultural day, one beach day, one slow day with the farmhouse pool). The marginal cost of adding 2 nights is the ferry (same cost), the accommodation (€140-280/night for a farmhouse), and the time. The marginal benefit is a different kind of trip entirely.
If your total Malta trip is 5 days, allocate 2 nights to Gozo. If 7 days, allocate 3. If 10 days, allocate 4-5. See the itineraries for the day-by-day breakdown.
If the day trip is genuinely your only option
A few notes on doing it well:
- Start early. The 09:00 ferry is the right one; the 10:00 or 10:30 boats compress your day too much.
- Hire a car at Mgarr rather than relying on buses. The bus network on Gozo is decent, but it adds 20-30 minutes per transfer, which is a lot in a 6-hour day.
- Skip the museums you do not care about at the Cittadella. The bastion circuit + Cathedral is the essential; the smaller museums add depth but cost time.
- Lunch fast. The full Maltese lunch tradition is 2 hours; a quick ftira at Maxokk is 20 minutes and lets you visit one more site.
- Pack swimwear even in shoulder season. Dwejra Bay or Mġarr ix-Xini is a 15-minute swim that turns the day from a tour into a holiday.
Book a guided Gozo day trip on GetYourGuide. Most operators bundle the ferry, the Cittadella, Ggantija and Dwejra. Useful if you do not want to drive yourself.
What to skip on a Gozo day trip
- Comino: do not try to fit it in. Comino plus a Gozo daytrip in one day is 12+ hours of travel for a rushed version of both. See the Blue Lagoon activity for the proper Comino strategy.
- Multiple swimming stops: pick one (Dwejra Bay or Mġarr ix-Xini) and skip the rest.
- Ramla Bay: it is on the other side of Gozo from the Cittadella; the drive costs 45 minutes round trip. Save it for an overnight stay.
- The Ta’ Pinu sanctuary: lovely but takes a 30-minute detour from the main Gozo route. Save it.
Getting there
The ferry is the only access:
- Cirkewwa-Mgarr car ferry: every 30-45 minutes, €15.70 return for car + driver.
- Valletta-Mgarr fast passenger ferry: hourly in summer, €7.50 one way. 45 minutes, no vehicles.
Cirkewwa-Mgarr ferry schedule.
What this day actually looks like
A reasonable, slightly rushed but rewarding day. You see three of the four headline Gozo sights, eat one Gozitan meal, and get a sense of the island scale. You also come away wanting to come back, which is the right outcome.
If you can avoid the day-trip pattern in favour of an overnight stay, do. If you cannot, this is the version that makes the day work.
