Ggantija temples on Gozo: older than the Egyptian pyramids

Ggantija (literally “the giantess”) is the older of the two Maltese megalithic temple complexes on Gozo, and the oldest of the seven UNESCO-listed temples in the country. Built between 3600 and 3200 BC, the two adjoining temples are within a shared enclosing wall, with the larger southern temple still containing limestone slabs over 5 metres tall and weighing in excess of 50 tonnes.

The site sits in Xagħra in north-central Gozo, a 15-minute drive from Victoria. The combined ticket with Ta’ Kola windmill and the Xagħra Stone Circle viewing platform makes Ggantija the strongest single cultural visit on Gozo.

What you see

The two temples sit side by side within a single enclosing wall of vertical limestone slabs. The construction is the standard Maltese temple plan: trefoil chambers arranged around a central corridor, with the largest stones placed vertically as orthostats and smaller stones laid horizontally above. The larger southern temple has the more impressive carved decoration; the smaller northern temple is the more intimate space.

The libation holes carved into the floor stones are visible (small bowl-shaped depressions used for ritual liquid offerings).

The “Fat Lady” base is the lower half of a colossal statue (the original upper half was lost; the lower half remains in situ). The statue probably represented a fertility deity.

What is included

The €10 combined ticket covers:

1. Ggantija temples (90 minutes). The visitor centre has a film and reproduction artefacts; the temple visit is on a wooden walkway around the perimeter.
2. Ta’ Kola windmill (a working 18th-century windmill 200 metres down the road, 20 minutes inside).
3. Xagħra Stone Circle viewing platform (a Neolithic burial complex, marked but unexcavated and visitable only from the platform).

All three are within walking distance of each other.

When to go

Best time: first thing in the morning. The site opens at 09:00. Arrive at opening or by 09:30 before the day-trip tour groups arrive at 11:00.

Worst time: 11:00 to 13:00 in summer, when the Gozo Channel ferry brings the morning day-trippers across and they cluster at Ggantija for the standard daytrip itinerary.

Best season: spring and autumn for the light and the temperature. Summer is hot on the exposed site; winter is fine but the visitor centre café closes earlier.

No advance booking required for general admission. The site rarely sells out.

The visit, in order

1. Visitor centre (15 minutes): film + reproduction artefacts + introductory display.
2. Ggantija temples (60 minutes): the wooden walkway runs around the perimeter and through the inner courtyard. The audioguide explains the construction phases.
3. Ta’ Kola windmill (20 minutes): walk 200 metres down the road. Working mechanism, traditional Gozitan grain milling, small museum of village life.
4. Xagħra Stone Circle (15 minutes): drive or walk 800 metres to the viewing platform. The site itself is not excavated; you see it from above.

Total: 2 to 2.5 hours including walks between sites.

The classic Gozo day:

• Morning: Ggantija + Ta’ Kola + Stone Circle (2.5 hours).
• Lunch in Xagħra: at Oleander in the main square (Maltese kitchen, casual) or Ta’ Frenc for the high-end version (book ahead).
• Afternoon: drive to Dwejra for the Inland Sea boat trip and the former Azure Window site. 90 minutes.
• Late afternoon: Cittadella in Victoria (90 minutes, €15 combined ticket).
• Sunset and dinner in Xlendi: Saint Patrick’s or Ic-Cima.

This full Gozo day fits between an early ferry across (08:00 or 09:00 from Cirkewwa) and a late ferry back (19:00 or 20:00 to Cirkewwa).

90 minutes is the floor (Ggantija alone, fast walk).

2.5 hours is the standard combined ticket visit.

3-4 hours for an unrushed visit with full audioguide use plus the Stone Circle viewing platform.

What to skip

• “Gozo in a day” bundled tours from Malta that visit Ggantija for 30 minutes. The temple wants at least 90 minutes for any kind of meaningful visit.
• The Xagħra Stone Circle walking access: there is none. The site is closed to public walking; the viewing platform is the official access.
• Cheap unofficial guides outside the visitor centre. The official audioguide (included) is well-produced.

Getting there

• From Mgarr ferry: bus #307 to Xagħra, around 25 minutes from the harbour. Or drive (15 minutes).
• From Victoria (Gozo): bus #307, 15 minutes. Drive 10 minutes.
• Free parking at the visitor centre.

Accessibility

The visitor centre, café and toilets are fully accessible.

The temple visit is on a raised wooden walkway, wheelchair-accessible throughout. This is the most wheelchair-friendly of the Maltese temple sites.

Ta’ Kola windmill has a step-up entrance and stairs to the upper level; the ground floor and the small museum are accessible.

The Stone Circle viewing platform has a step-free approach from the road.

Why this site matters

Ggantija is the oldest of the Maltese temples and one of the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world. The construction predates the Egyptian pyramids by about a thousand years and Stonehenge (in its earliest phase) by three to four centuries.
